I am not only a person who loves music but I also like to make things. I am starting to learn blacksmithing and I am building my forge. The metal I used was too thin so I rendered some clay and sand to line it with. Thought I would put a little fiddle music with it also to entertain the music enthusiasts. The tunes are Finley Creek blues and Louisville Breakdown.

  • Believe it or not.. ...

Believe it or not...its just common sifted clay and sand. I added grass clippings to help keep it from cracking and compressed it (more like, punched it with my hands) to pack it as it was drying. It cracked just a little. I have another video that shows it running. Its on the video response. Its on my other account and is at the end of the video.

  • An old shop vac ...

An old shop vac that blows into the forge would work. You need a good amount of air but too much can blow your coal back at ya. What you can to do is just try it and if its too much, put a sliding door between the blower and the forge then you can regulate the amount of air. Copper isnt really the best to start out with in my opinion, I would get some 3/8ths mild steel rods and make some coat hanging hooks or something like that. Wrought iron would be easy to make stuff with.

  • I'm actually ...

I'm actually thinking about making a forge, based on this design, but the air feed is going to be from an old shop vac, how strong of an air current would you need? My next question is if I were to start playing around w/ hot fire and metal, what would be a good thing to start out with like the very first time before I start making swords? I was actually thinking about using scrap copper, something elemental not an alloy and purifying it. What do you think? Good video, easy instructions.

  • I have that hinging ...

I have that hinging door on the bottom of the dump that stays closed until I lift it and dump it. If it was open to the ground the air would not go upwards and the fire would not get a supply of air.

  • So you use the ...

So you use the clicker breaker (the material makes a clink sound when it drops) to break the hardened goo and it drops out your ash gate.

  • That is a clinker ...

That is a clinker breaker. When you use coal (not Charcoal-made from burned wood- like I used in my other video) you get this metallic goo that forms at the bottom and cuts off your air and keeps you from getting the forge hot enough to weld with.
