  • By routine I do not ...

By routine I do not mean monotony or boredom. Yes, give them different toys, but don't be late coming home for play time.

Why would you clip the bird's wings? Anything that prevents an animal from expressing its natural behaviors is cruel.

African Grays are the "African violets" of the parrot family. They are EXTREMELY sensitive. Don't make comparisons to German Shephards please!

Aw this is so sad. The bird's feathers are all ragged and he's begging the woman to go back to his cage. He really needed a break instead of being in that place for most of his life!

  • Alex looks ragged ...

Alex looks ragged because he was rescued. Most likely from being abused, when parrots are lonely or angry, they pluck out their feathers. If you go to a rescue facility like The Gabriel Foundation, there are a bunch of poor birds like this one that need homes.

  • If you notice, Alex ...

If you notice, Alex is outside his cage quite a bit, on perches. Which is what we do with our birds. We have a perch in every room of the house. But when it's bedtime or feeding time, back to the cage they go. My gray plucked his left wing to the point that he looked like he was run through a meat grinder, nervous habit....I had to give him more brain stimulation and now he's fine.

My point is they took breaks in between training techniques. So it wasn't a steady 8 to 12 hour period. (DUH)
You want to see animal cruelty, look at the puppy mills.

Other animals are worked, and some very hard. Have you ever seen a police dog training???These dogs are rewarded with play toys and play time, what does that tell you? Why don't you cry about the mice and rats used in cancer research next.

  • Grays generally ...

Grays generally pick one person to bond with but they do respond well to other people sometimes. They don't mind their own quiet time, and they don't like routine. You are supposed to stimulate them with different activity, since they are a intelligent bird. Cages are offered in smaller sizes for a safety zone to them, and for sleep or nesting.Wing clipping is for their own safety, not for cruelty. You either need to become a parrot owner or get your facts right, because you are wrong.

you're right! I get pissed when I see people forcing parrots doing things: worst: when the cage is to small. Would they want to live in a closet?

Your point is that it is okay to torture Alex with an 8-12 hour work day, because it will help people understand and respect other parrots?

I have never heard of anyone working a dog for eight-to-twelve hours a day. And dogs aren't parrots.

  • Do you own an ...

Do you own an African Gray? That's not molting at all. That is feather plucking. I have seen it worse in other videos.

I don't need to speculate when Pepperberg admits on camera that she and her graduate students act in rotation to keep Alex on an 8 to 12 hour a day treadmill of work, when the parrot is begging for a break.

Grays are PRONE to feather plucking when they are captive, with wings clipped, in small cages, and no mate. This is not civilized.

  • African Grays: 1. ...

    African Grays:

    1. Mate with one bird/person for life. Alex was forced to interact with many changing graduate students. This is unpleasant.

    2. Grays don't like to be separated from their mates, but Pepperberg abandoned Alex for long stretches.

    3. Grays like routine, but Alex's only routine was a treadmill of training and experiments. Many strangers and trips.

    4. Alex's wings were cut, so the parrot could not express his natural behaviors. That's animal cruelty.

    5. Some cages were too small.

Parrots don't molt like that. It's wishful thinking.

I have had the same owner for 27 years. I should know something about humans and parrots.

swissdanihaller: "Imagine you're being asked the whole time to remember stuff. Doesn't that stress you out????"

    Of course, it does!

"Just leave parrots to imitate what they want to or maybe do it with some sentences or words but the really should be keeping the fun bit of life. And for god's sake! Give him free space!"

    I agree.
