    this is pure gossip.MIss Mitchell's husband never advised her of any roles. she had a coach that she confided in to make choices.
    Knowing her personally, she never imitated Price, hardly ever listened to her recordings, was advised no to.

    I like Mitchel more. Never liked Moffo that much. Anyway, the production at the Met was a beautiful one. Everybody sang well and I think she incredible. Really liked her very much.

    It is quite startling to hear how fast her voice deteriorated after this. NYC opera fanatic has an audio clip of Ms. Mitchell singing this from the Met in 1984. Her voice had become strident and certainlt didn't soar, which is something this aria and cabaletta ned, in addition to the firm bottom. I think that the comparison to Bumbry is apt; I think they had very similar voices in some ways. I actually ushered once at the Lyric in Chicago when Bumbry sang this role.

    Leona Mitchell is a wonderful singer!! She is actually semi-retired and now lives in her hometown of Enid, Oklahoma. She gives recitals, and concerts quite frequently and is the cultural ambassador for the state of Oklahoma. And by the way, I hear she still sings well at her currennt age of 58.

    Wasn't her husband the reason why she had a shaky career? Supposedly...according to an old, well-known friend of mine (tenor)...she confided with him stating that her husband acted as her agent and made her sing roles that negatively influenced her voice.If it is her,she was at Curtis Institute a few years ago preparing for 'career revival'.

    Bumbry's is a blessed unique voice, Mitchell had a great soaring Verdi voice, very clear,amazing timbre, I saw her in Aida at the Met in the 80's very in control of her top and she owned the stage, she had a complicated career, confidence problems, she is no longer singing but did a cd a few years ago, a late self produced of sacred and classical songs, not up to her earlier work but nice to hear her voice again.
