the remake looks like it will totally miss the point, which is to make people think about the consequences of conflict and think about the bigger picture.

Not really. The original wasn't about destroying things so's to make the movie attention getting. It was very low key, made you think. It was a movie for intelligent people. You'd do better to watch the original before this remake comes out, and get a good taste for it. Then watch the new version. They won't compare.

This movie was AMAZING!

It is a critique of the arms race that You and the soviets had spiraled into.

You did fight wars and fund some in other countries at the time, proxy wars with the soviets and funded dictatorships in Latin america.

Japan Had completely renounced violence and made war illegal (it still is for them) germany was still under allied occupation and a crippled shell of her former self.

The alien represents both anoutside intervention, and the threat of the soviets.

This film is actually a love story. Too bad she and her boy can't fly away with the alien and the robot at the end. The boy thinks Mr. Carpenter is really neat and it's pretty obvious so does she. And when the power goes off she's stuck alone in the elevator with him, etc.

The face to face contact happen in EWARDS AIR FORCE BASE or LOS ALAMO,in 1954.Some GOVNT official had connections to hollywood.Thats why there been so much movies about aliens back then & now they'll tryin' to get our attenttion,same thing with that movie E.T.they tryin to get our reaction about aliens if they were to live among us.
