This video is a gift to one of the YouTubers, Michael (joey75220). This video demonstrates you step-by-step about how to set your D80's pop-up flash as the commander for Nikon Creative Lighting System (C.L.S.) with both flashes of Nikon SB-600 and SB-800.

This video also apply to D40 / D40X / D60 / D80 / D200 / D300 / D700 because these D-SLR's are compatible with Nikon Creative Lighting System feature using built-in popup flash. *ADDED* D40 / D40X / D60 requires an external flash to be used as a commander.

D1/D2/D3-Series / F-Series do not have pop-up flash and does not have internal Nikon Creative Lighting System feature but you can do one of these: use a flash unit as a master flash (SB-800 or SB-900 only), use a SU-800 Commander, or use a Pocketwizard unit to trigger the remote flashes.

D50 / D70 / D100 does not have internal Nikon Creative Lighting System feature but you can use the popup flash in manual mode and set the SB-800 / SB-900 for SU-4 mode then set the SB-800 / SB-900 for manual OR you can pair it up with Pocketwizards and it will fire, no problem.

Enjoy!

No, of course not. The IR panel simply blocks the incoming flash from the onboard (or built-in) flash but still send signal to other flashes within 15 feet radius. Expect some troubles with the IR panel when using outdoors or in an area with a lot of intersecting objects. The remote flashes require a clear communication between the onboard flash and remote flash units.

You got a quite pair of eyes, to answer your question, when you are using C.L.S. with your camera and C.L.S. enabled flash units without any cables or radio slaves, the Infrared Red communication must be visible from each other to receive signal to trigger the flash. If you are pointing the camera outside of the flash's IR direction, 50:50 chance it will receive signal or not. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks! I found some of the info useful. Like the ON/OFF button getting you out of the menu change. BUT, I did not see the SB-800 Flash go off in the shots taken, I think you either made a mistake or I was thinking the D*0 should have triggered your remote flash to go off. I shoot D80 and use the flash.
