My all-time favorite cartoon short as a child and 35 years later it still makes me laugh.
The cat has always been my favorite part. :p
Done as a one-shot, with all original characters who never appeared in any other MGM cartoon, Symphony is pretty much an anomaly in Avery's canon. What makes it even more so is the fact that Avery hired designer Tom Oreb to design all the characters and layout for the entire film. Just for this one cartoon. That's it.
Oreb had been working at Disney pretty consistantly at the time, but left the company in the early-50's. Oreb worked with Avery at MGM for this one cartoon and then went back to Disney where he designed characters for such projects as Toot, Whistle, Plunk & Boom, Sleeping Beauty and One Hundred and One Dalmations.
Additional Fact: The voice work of Saint Peter, Noah Webster & 'Slangster' was by English actor, Dan Brown. One of Dan Brown's last acting appearances was a guest-star on "I Love Lucy", episode "The Moustache". He portrayed the un-named photographer.
**** I wouldn't be surprised, if Tex Avery had that in mind, while he was at Warner Brothers. I believe the main thing that led to the creation of the cartoon, is that Tex Avery's birthdate occurred just three days before February 29th! Wednesday, February 26th, 1908 - Tuesday, August 26th, 1980. Tex Avery's lifetime [72 & 1/2 years], in reality was 26,480 days, equalling 3,782 Weeks & 6 Days.
well didnt this cartoon used to be played on CN? it now S**ks

I despise the "Adult Swim" programs!
"Tom and Jerry" is all I watch on it now.
Tex Avery's "Symphony In Slang" cartoon is my all-time favorite! I phrase it as "HYSTERIALLY HUMOROUS & HILARIOUS!" from beginning to end. When I originally saw it I was almost out of breath, continiously laughing! "36 x 24 x 36 = 31,104". Math_Maestro.

By DMajorBoss [Affiliate User] 1213472391 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWith such expressions as "Ridin' on 24s," "Drop some friends off at the pool," "Bustin' nuts," "Pimp juice," and "Jumping the Shark," a modern day Symphony in Slang would either be a hilarious parody or something only capable of being shown at night (possibly on Adult Swim).
By DMajorBoss [Affiliate User] 1213469682 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removehe liked the gags. oh and if i used a slang i would use the frige is running..and it would show a frige ACTUALLY running.
By gagbonkers [Affiliate User] 1213468253 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIndeed, it's quite hilarious. Just imagine what slang one would use today in such a cartoon.
By DMajorBoss [Affiliate User] 1213468139 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei showed this to a friend of mine...he laughed his head off
By gagbonkers [Affiliate User] 1213442424 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei wonder this is what tex imaged this if he was in heaven which came to this cartoon
By gagbonkers [Affiliate User] 1213442239 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBy the by, I'd like to add "Who Killed Who?" to that list. I'd have to say that, after some thought, "Magical Maestro" is first, "Who Killed Who?" is second, and "Symphony in Slang" is third.
^_^
I must admit that this is one of my favorite Tex Avery shorts (next to Magical Maestro) ever created. Quite a joy to watch.
Thanks for sharing.
Ha,ha,ha! Thanks for this.
By FuzzyCabesas [Affiliate User] 1212423207 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOMG! I just love Tex Avery! This is just one of his greatest! Always loved seeing this as a young kid, even though I probably didn't get it back then. Thanks for the post.
Much appreciated.
This is one of the best animated features ever to be produced. Tex Avery was a true master at his art. Rich hogan is a genius at the script. Modern Cartoons these days, lack the true creativity that are featured in cartoons of yesteryear. We can always look back at nostalgia and gain much insight from the true masters of the trade, they hold the essence of what cartoons are truly supposed to be.

By cutsie5666 [Affiliate User] 1211622377 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis must have been the cartoon that inspired Airplane, with everything taken literally. Also, some of the character designs do look very "Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom" looking.
By scottof83 [Affiliate User] 1210116883 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOne of the best cartoon shorts ever! I remember watching this as a kid with my mom and sister.
It's just as funny now as it was back then... maybe even more so with some of the outdated 50's slang.
