  • I listen to ...

I listen to multiple forms of today's (w/ in the past 40 years history)rock. I'm white and I agree. Actually I was convincing the same principle to my grandma, she doesn't understand. So, I am showing Berry. Actually, many "rockabilly singers" i.e. Elvis and Lewis got their songs from i.e. little richard and CHuck. Who cares though, we all express ourselves, and of course they were going to imitate the heroes they grew up listening to.
THANKS, every rock listener should know this.

  • melkiemelkie and ...

melkiemelkie and others: I understand where you're coming from with your comment however, it does matter but for the sake of saving Black culture---not to impose any kind of superiority. There's no disputing history---all great musical forms in this country were pioneered by African Americans. However, white Americans benefitted from it and got very rich from the sale and promotion of 'race records' which is what the recordings were called. It's history and you can look it up for yourselves.

  • "the first rock and ...

"the first rock and roll song was by bill hayley and the comets." Haley was definitely one of the first "white" guys to take up the rock-and-roll-sounding style, but if "rock and roll" is a musical style that "black" musicians or whoever else could make (which it certainly is imo!) then recordings like "Rock The Joint" by Jimmy Preston were even earlier than Haley got interested in the style (Preston had a #6 R&B hit with that in 1949; Haley first got interested in that substyle of R&B in 1950).

  • "Blacks did not ' ...

"Blacks did not 'invent' Rock and Roll." Almost all of the artists who made Little-Richard-style rock and roll records before '54were "black." ("We're Gonna Rock This Joint" by the Jackson Brothers, "Rock H-Bomb Rock" by H-Bomb Ferguson, "How About Rocking With Me" by Piney Brown, and "Rockin' Is Our Business" by the Treniers, for example.) And almost all of the rock and roll records made before '54 were Little-Richard-style rock and roll records. Elvis began recording in '54, Chuck in '55.

Everybody stole from everybody. Most people stole from Chuck, without this man there wouldn't be Rock n' Roll as we know it so his influence shows up a lot, even in people who may not even know who he is.

Elvis took part in modifying those lyrics. As far as the style goes, Elvis created and WAS the sound. Elvis was the source. And he was especially the source when it came to the sudden popularity of Rock and Roll. That is impossible to deny.
