  • Never made any of ...

Never made any of the statements you're attributing to me. I only responded when you said "Keith had it right." I mean, he didn't. He wasn't playing what was being asked. Chuck Berry might have been nitpicking, but it's not like he was just making up the criticism.

  • OK you're right. ...

OK you're right. Keith Richards can't play worth a crap and sounded like rubbish from the first try. And Chuck doesn't like busting the balls of famous rockers.

Um, perhaps you ought to listen to the original records. They should be part of any pop guitar player's education. Also great song writing instruction.

  • Hey, I dunno ...

Hey, I dunno anything about the original recording. All I know is I saw Chuck Berry demonstrate the way he wanted it played about 4 times before Keith Richards got it.

  • Have a listen to ...

Have a listen to the original record -the "slur" simply aint there as Chuck said it was. Keith not only got it right he got it "reet".

Besides, Johnny Johnson steals the show. To hell with the guitars. Listen to the early records with Willie Dixon on bass, Johnny Johnson, Jerome Green & Jasper Thomas. -That's one hell of a band. Chuck's talent was writing great songs and masterful lyrics. -America's greatest poet. It was the song writing that made it all sound new.

  • I called it a "slur ...

I called it a "slur" because, technically, a bent note played this way is a slur: two or more notes played within one strike of the string(s). A "hammer on" is also a type of "slur." I'm not denying that Chuck Berry was making a big deal out of nothing, but he showed Richards the proper way to play three times before he got it right. You said he "got it right," which means you need to check your speakers.

  • Agree. Chuck is ...

Agree. Chuck is Chuck. A lot of ego there. In those days, he LOVED yanking around rich youger rockers like Richards. Some jealousy about money, I suspect. Chuck did OK, but never filled Stadiums like the Stones were starting to do. Chuck also never really made albums -everything was a single. Making 10-12 songs work together as one was something he never did. -No commercial demand at the time, but Sinatra sure did that & by the mid 70s the concept album was everyone's goal.

  • Should he also play ...

Should he also play the scratches in the record? Notice that Chuck screws up half the lyrics. That "slur" as you put it was simply more of a bend on the D rather than the G string. Chuck was making a big deal out of nothing. In a regular road gig he couldn't give a crap as long as your time was solid and you knew the song. Besides, his lyrics are the most important thing. Pure poetry of word & phrasing. The guitar is easy! Try to sing 'Too Much Monkey Business' at 110-120 BPM!

  • " Keith had it ...

" Keith had it right, but on a strat it just aint gonna sound like a 335."

Nope. Keith repeatedly played the last bar of the intro without the final slurred note(s) pre-bent, so it started by ascending, not descending. I think Chuck Berry was being pretty picky, and the audience wouldn't have noticed a difference, but Keith wasn't playing it correctly.

  • I was at the movie ...

I was at the movie shoot and it really was embarassing. Clapton and Richards were very patient but Chuck was being Chuck. JJ was the greatest as was Steve Jordan of course. Hard not to like CB. He started it all.

No tutorials. He just showed up and you're lucky if you got a full run through of any song. You were expected to know his records by heart...and you know what? We did. A pleasure, but no Johnny Johnson. JJ is what makes this video for me. Check out how he stares daggers at Chuck. Go Johnny, Go.

  • Very true; he ...

Very true; he usually hired a few local semi-amateurs and gave them some tutorials whilst playing. Here the pattern repeats itself; Keef or no Keef - the Chuck does it the way he is acustomed to. Wouldn't surprise me if all parties benefitted from it, i.e. even Richards.

  • BTW: Dig JJ on ...

BTW: Dig JJ on piano. Go Johnny Go. He was my favorite. Also from St. Louis. Had his own band -played a lot of small clubs when I was young. I sat in on harp with him one night. nice guy. He was leering at Chuck when Chuck starting giving Keith Richards the business. -He knew it was all bullshit for the cameras.

  • Last I was in St ...

Last I was in St Louis, Chuck was playing in the UCity Loop. -80 years old! Years ago, he used to pull into NYC, or what ever town, with only his toothbrush and a 335. He'd pick up who ever wasn't busy that night. And, yeah I got $100 for the night -we all did. Chuck would get 5-6 grand. Bo Diddly was the same way, except he couldn't tune his guitar. Hell, if you don't know ALL his songs, stop playing! Chuck's a great poet. Dig the lyrics to "No Money Down" or "Nadine".

  • Keith did fine. ...

Keith did fine. I'm from Saint Louis. Grew up watching Chuck. Chuck loves putting guys like Richards through dumb shit. Keith had it right, but on a strat it just aint gonna sound like a 335. Keith should've been on the Front-middle PUs. On the road, when you played with Berry, it was always a pick-up band -$100 for the night and NO rehersal -hell everyone KNEW the songs! Damn fun and Chuck IS America's greatest poet.

The problem with this is...the bigots of today. Keith and Chuck had nothing but utmost respect for each other. Too bad that those morons who post racist comments on this forum don't.
To all of you racist ignorants, how sad for you. You would let the color of a person's skin dictate what you feel about a person....whether he is good or bad. Shame on you.

He is far, far worse than an idiot, whitebengal987. He is a stone racist. You Tube should not allow beautiful clips like this to be defiled by the vomit spewed by gutter dwellers like jrmoldenhauer. If you care about the spirit that Keith and Chuck so obviously share, please rate this asshole down and block him. His rantings are the exact antithesis of that spirit. Maybe You Tube will get the message that such garbage is unacceptable.
