  • Yes you are correct ...

Yes you are correct. I'm sure the "old timers" felt the same way when rubber gaskets were introduced and there was no more need for lead and oakum joints.

  • I appreciate you ...

I appreciate you post.We both agree that some skills are and will be lost in future but we also must agree that new products, once perfected, will pass us by.We need to be willing to accept and try new products to keep the old skills still alive in our trades.Dont be disheartened there was in the past a plumber who said the same thing about PVC but it still takes skill to do it properly!---Bob

  • If you have lead ...

If you have lead pipes in your house you should definitely remove them. You may have galvanized steel, which is common in older homes. The easiest way to tell would be to look at the joints in the pipe. Threaded joints indicate steel pipe, a joint with a large bulge indicates lead. Either way, you would not solder either of these pipes.

  • I have seen ...

I have seen ProPress and Shark-Bite both leak. On one project I worked on the ProPress fitting was under pressure for 9 months before it blew apart. Besides, ProPress takes the skill out of the trade and only lines the boss' pocket since he can hire low paid unskilled workers.

  • wipe fittings ...

wipe fittings before adding heat to prevent solder from traveling the same path as flux run-off, heat from opposite side of fitting wait for flux to stop boiling, this will prevent solder from boiling out of the fitting into the inside of your pipe, remove heat and push the same amount of solder as the pipe diameter into the fitting until you get a drip or miniscus around the fitting, theres no need to clean the fitt. do not shock with water let stand for 5 seconds before addind a wet towel.

  • you should wipe ...

you should wipe fittings with a clean dry towel before sweating to avoid solder traveling the path of the flux run off, heat from opposite side of pipe and wait for flux to stop boiling remove heat and apply solder and push the solder into the joint in one place until you get a drip from opposite side or solder creates a miniscus. there will be no need to re-flux the pipe for cleaning, this saves time and money.

  • You can ...

You can mechanically press up to a 4" copper or bronze elbow in 5 seconds now using ProPress tools. RIDGID makes a great one. They work on a wet system without flux or flame and they never leak.

  • did you make sure ...

did you make sure to set your propress before you used it on your pipe? this should be the only reason it didn't stay on. I've never ran into that problem but i always set the gun before i used it on the pipe. I seen others run into it but they didn't set it.
