This song is but one example of why I think Steely Dan is about the best band to come out of the rock era. Consider how many memorable (if indeed not financially lucrative) hits that Becker and Fagen made. And then think about some of the all-time musical greats that they collaborated with over the years (McDonald, Baxter, Carlton to name a few).

hehehe steely dan is my favourite band of all time... but seriously, did you not realize that they aren't actually playing?? Donald Fagen is singing his own back-ups, there are no horn players playing the horn-lines, there are no amps, and they fade out... hahaha they must have hated being on that show, whatever it was

I could be wrong, but I think the "California tumbles into the sea" lyric is a variation on the "When pigs fly" phrase. It's followed by "That'll be the day I go back to Annondale". Meaning, he's never going back. Annondale was where he went to college. His old school.
