MY new HHO cell started to produce gas before I hooked up the power, I had only planned to do a quick test with the new bridge rectifier that I had made, and got a suprise.

  • one question for ...

    one question for you hs175111: if the only gas he is making is H2, what happens to the O?

  • This is extremely ...

    This is extremely elementary chemistry. Buy a textbook or take a class or something.

    1)The only gas you are making is H2.
    2)This is a chemical reaction, NOT electrolysis, there is nothing electrical about this
    3)MUCH easier to react an acid with a metal, basically, its like putting Zinc or Iron or Magnesium or any metal above hydrogen on the 'chemical activity series' in an acid (stronger acids get better results)
    Easily available acids:
    Strong=HCl, dept store
    Weak=Acetic Acid (vinegar)

  • Its simple just ...

    Its simple just like the others said. They are actually using this method to create hydrogen. They take aluminum and gallium and add water the reaction between the chemicals and the water create hydrogen. The problem with this process is that gallium is expensive. The plus side is the gallium can be reused by removing the aluminum from it. But only high grade pure gallium is on the market at this time.

    man, seems like u spend alot of money in this area. I used up 200 bucks already. I cleaned everything up and call it a done research. You seems to work hard on this project so I'll share some info with you. Use stainless steal and zinc. Put the positive end (end that make things corrode depends on your battery company convention) to zinc. Do simple capacitor, the simple the better. What's left is how high u can go with your voltage. Plz don't use coil design if u do high AC. goodluck

  • Yeah, the sodium ...

    Yeah, the sodium hydroxide is reacting chemically with the aluminum which produces hydrogen gas, I believe. Don't quote me on that though.

    Have you ever made a draino bomb? You put some aluminum foil and and sodium hydroxide into a plastic water bottle and put on the cap to make a seal. The sodium hydroxide eats the aluminum and makes the gas which builds up pressure until the bottle bursts.

    Nice welding setup though, I hear those stickmates are pretty good.

    just because the chemical equation is simple doesn't mean that he absolutely shouldn't try doing this for fun. he wasn't claiming to invent anything, and his apparatus certainly is not "simple".

  • please be careful ...

    please be careful Al is a catalyst if oxidized it well EXPLODE!!! same with zinc and hcl. I am not being mean but if I were you I would pull out a chem textbook. Read it. what you are doing will not allow you to stop the reaction it will go til product is used in its entirety.

  • This is pretty ...

    This is pretty basic chemistry. You can throw zinc into hydrochloric acid and get hydrogen.

    Zn + 2HCl -> ZnCl_2 + H_2

    Congratulations. You figured out something people have known about for 120 years.
    For the future: go to a community college and take the first year of general chemistry. You will be much less surprised but what you did.

  • You might have ...

    You might have figured this out by now, as your aluminum tubing disintegrates.....but the drain cleaner chemicals react with the aluminum and produce hydrogen as a by-product. It does this by oxidizing the aluminum. It is eating your aluminum tubes, and they will not last long. You can throw aluminum beer cans into that solution and it will do the same: you'll get hydrogen gas, and the cans will be eaten away.

    just so ya all know , I made a cell stainless fenderwashers , with alum sheet around the washers , ran it up to temp ,had great output , used crystal drain cleaner , lol turned the power off , it ran for 30 min after i turned the power off , opened it up , no alumin sheetmetal left ,
