This is a flat picking lesson full of licks (not to offend any Sailor's Hornpipe fans out there...my humor is intended to be taken with...um...humor). I've tried to explain how to combine the licks and how to work with licks of your own. Enjoy!

  • Hey buddy.... ...

    Hey buddy....

I'm a medium strings guy for sure...I find that with light strings they flex too much and don't react quick enough when building up speed. I know of several good bluegrassers that like lights, but not too many. Good luck!! And welcome to the world of bluegrass!

Mr. Ben, first, great sense of humor man. The intro here was priceless. You (and your family) are incredibly talented. Have to get in line here and thank you for your contribution and effort! Been playing 3 years / mostly blues, I'm just getting on the bluegrass train. Very challenging and enjoyable! I saw another comment here requesting Salt Creek? I just learned the basic tune and will try to apply some of the G licks etc you've shown us. Be great if you could jam that one out? Russ-Murphy TX

Orrin Star anchors his pinky too. BUT, I have to say, Ben, I took your advice from the Speed #1 video, stopped anchoring my pinky, and it gave me the breakthrough I've been struggling to find for more years than I care to admit. Thanks! I can't wait for Speed #2!

  • Lot's of them do, ...

Lot's of them do, including the MAN, Mr. Tony Rice...and his step-brother Wyatt. However, LOTS of good ones don't , like Cody Kilby of Kentucky Thunder and one of the best pickers of all time, Mr. David Grier. I'm currently going back and forth...both have advantages for me and I've yet to settle in on one for the long haul. Really it boils down to what works for you. I've tried to copy 2 dozen different players' technique, and none of them are magic for me.

  • first of all, Ben, ...

first of all, Ben, thanks. Your lessons are really helpful. Do you ever anchor your pinky finger on your right hand? I have been playing that way for years but I noticed that most flatpickers don't do it. Do you think it would be more advantagious for me to learn to pick without anchoring?

Good Job! I got a few of these licks down and it took my playing to a whole new level, thanks for your time. When you get a chance, I would like to see some of Doc Watsons endings when he picks his fiddle tunes. (love that black mountain rag!)
