This Kendo clip is from Japan Public Broadcasting's documentary on " A Human's reaction ablitiy".The show includeded a short track start,Pro Baseball batter and Light weight Boxcer as well.
Interest thing about the show was that former studies suggested that Human
can not react no faster than 0.2 second limted bb the speed of electric pulse running through eye - frontal cortex brain - the body muscle..But, new sport analysis studis found
some athletes could react in less than 0.2 second.
Mr. Tanakanabe had much better reactive ability than Mr. Teramoto's. But,
he could not catch up Teramoto's Men already released before his.
Takanabe mentioned in his interview later that" He froze for a moment when
Teramoto change his move from aiming DO to MEM". This split second frozen
moment made his defeat. The narration concluded the segment stating that
" Takanabe won in reactive superiority, but Teramoto won in Kendo".

  • the point is you ...

the point is you will only improve at something if you love to do it. if your heart is not in something your body definitely wont be. most dojos will welcome spectators . or go see a university fencing practice. one piece of advice ,take time to make your choice so as not to spend precious money on equipment that will just collect dust when you've lost interest in using it. some practice two or even three arts. be careful, don't spread yourself thin at first. most important ...have fun!!!

  • kendoka are making ...

kendoka are making contact but the rules restrict what is counted as a valid cut. in kenjutsu there are rules to where you can make your cut. there is a battodo dojo in nyc that practices gekken which is kenjutsu with protective equipment. as far as reaction time is concerned.. you can improve your reaction time with many different activites . skipping rope for example. the point is to find a martial art that fits your needs and likes and go with that. ...cont

  • kendo is different ...

kendo is different from kenjutsu in that there are many rules in kendo whereas in kenjutsu there aren't. Kenjutsu preceeded kendo. kendo came about from a need to keep the practitioner alive. lesson learned in kenjutsu were lost with the lives of the defeated. turning the sword into the shinai and wearing bogu ( armor) was the birth of modern kendo. to answer your question of what you should study.. that is your decision. kendo is centered on keiko ( practice) as you saw in the video ...cont

Kendo is amazing in that it teaches you to hone your reaction time into fractions of a second. It's truly an amazing art. Unfortunately, it takes decades to get this good.

I just did some tests, and my reaction time seems to be 0.189 If you add that with the fact that its over 3 am, and I have no training whatsoever with reaction (cept computer games) I would say; Yes, that humans can only react after 0.2 sec is BULLSHIT

  • the bottom line is ...

the bottom line is that unless you are taking a life or risking your own life by using an actual sarpened sword then you are lacking in realism . that was the whole point of the development of kendo. i'ts hard to retain things that you learn when you're dead. taking a human life is far from pretending to.

I would guess a couple of reasons. First, he may not have hit the tsuki-dare and second, his zanshin may not have been strong enough to convince the shimpan that it was a valid point. I personally think that his zanshin says that he didn't seem to think it was good enough to be scored.
