He was not "shot down" on the ship, he got shot down over North Vietnam. The CVA-59 fire occured when a ZUNI rocket (like that what happened on the Enterprise and Oriskany) ignited do to heat and electrical discharge. Naval Aviators toured South East Asia as long as their squadrons and or Ships remained on station. Air Force pilots could "re-up" for another tour after 100 missions.
