  • jboram1: if you ...

jboram1: if you convert an engine that has electric start to run on hydrogen it will produce enough hydrogen to double gas usage and make more than enough electricity to make more hydro... and its safe!! only a little amount of hydrogen is in the reactor (reactor being the thing that convert H20 into hydro) and its produced as needed! all you have is water in the tanks! so in a way its better than this... no offense its just the water doubles MPG and the reduces it... Google for more info ok?

  • Do you know a place ...

Do you know a place to get hydrogen?

You have to make it, and that uses oil, or gas or some other source of energy. In other words, it solves nothing.

Hydrogen is just like battery, but a really rubbish battery. As its really hard to transport (takes loads of space up, and leaks out of tanks trough the steal!) and poor efficiency to produce.

  • i dont know about ...

i dont know about where you are trying to buy biodiesel, but i make my own, and i can make it for about $1.50 a gallon, compared to about $5.00 a gallon for petrodiesel. and any seals affected would also be effected by the vegetable oil.

and where do you live? because i know for a fact that a cold morning will lead to a very difficult start for your engine. SVO is really only good in the summer.

  • With respect to the ...

With respect to the cost, a couple of months back, it cost me about 55-60 quid to fill my car. That would last me for nearly two weeks commuting. Now it would cost about 70-75 pounds. With a 50-50 mix, I can pay around 40-45. If I chance my luck, I can pay even less.

  • Assorted seals are ...

Assorted seals are affected. An older diesel may run fine on biodiesel, but the point about SVO is COST. Biodiesel is not appreciably cheaper than petrochemical diesel, whereas even new SVO offers massive savings, more if it is used. It also doesn't need nice stuff like sodium hydroxide to be used. Biodiesel IS good, but in some ways, SVO is better. (You can also obtain it from loads more outlets if stuck)

  • what is affected ...

what is affected besides the fuel lines?? and a older diesel will run just fine on biodiesel, at least equally well as vegetable oil. and when you use biodiesel, your fuel pump isn't stressed any more than with petro diesel (possibly a little, little bit more, but not as much as veggie oil)

  • With biodiesel, you ...

With biodiesel, you don't save any money, and it isn't just the fuel lines which are affected. In general, it is the older diesels which work the best with SVO. The problem isn't normally one of total engine failure if certain precautions are taken. In fact the main bother is failure of the diesel pump. My local ice cream van runs on a mixture, as do I. Any additional bother/expense for heating etc. is offset by the savings in using SVO. I can save about £15 per week doing this with no mods.

  • why go through all ...

why go through all the trouble of installing extra heating elements when you could just pour in your biodiesel and go?? and SVO will probably not work in new diesels with common rail engines. Add to that the fact that veggie oil will jell up really easily, you have a recipe for total engine failure. oh, and the pumps of your engine system also have trouble with the thick veggie oil.

  • The viscosity can ...

The viscosity can be overcome by mixing with diesel or another suitable solvent, or as some people do, installing an extra heating circuit. (This can bedone from the car's existing cooling circuit. The main problem from the viscosity angle on Peugeots is the Lucas pump which can't handle it. (Bosch pumps can)

  • that may be, but ...

that may be, but the high viscosity of vegetable oil causes many more problems than deterioration of rubber lines. and that itself is a really small problem. almost every automobile made after the 80's has synthetic lines, and if it doesn't, you can easily replace them

Some say it is safer to use biodiesel. Thing is, vegetable oil doesn't cause the deterioration in rubber in some engines that biodiesel does.

  • I drive a 1994 ...

I drive a 1994 Peugeot 306 XNd. As I write this, diesel is £1.23.9 per litre at the station beside my Mum. I can BUY cooking oil at 56p per litre in Tesco. As stated, you can use second hand oil as long as you filter to at least ten microns, although finer would be an idea. Replace your fuel filter more frequently (Cheap and easy) and DON'T even think about using it with a Lucas pump, as they don't like it...at all...seriously.

Thats correct rudolph diesel originally made it to run on peanut oil. ALSO, the SVO needs to be at about 170 degrees or you will get coking in the rings and pump...
