This is the front end to our smart house project (or smart office as is the case here). It uses Microsoft speech recognition and Guile 3D agent software (featuring Nicole). The speech synthesis is AT & T voices.
The program is written in a .Net language and an earlier version can be downloaded for free (minus the Agent Nicole of course).

Of course speech recognition in a relatively noise-free environment is no longer such a challenge and the real work is applying adaptive signal processing to this to improve the hit rate in a noisy environment. This is the main thrust of our research. The recognition part is our interface with the house or office. The present system of course has great potential for disabled people. The devices on this video are powered by the parallel port or via USB to a local Triac switching box we made. I have since added X10 devices which are more convenient and "off the shelf". The X10 devices can be placed anywhere in a house without extra wiring. I will post another video soon.
On Windows XP only SAPI4 speech sythesis is supported by Micropsoft for Agents. However, SAPI 5 voices can also be used concurrently which is like a voice-over.

  • This application ...

This application has no intelligence. It is not a chat-bot or Hal like program. It is mearly a system for home entertainment, security and intended for the disabled. In fact it is our front end to our noise-cancelling software. (well - the other way around in fact - the noise-cancelling comes first!) Yes it would be possible to put intelligence of some sort. I have yet to be impressed by the state of AI - the examples I have seen.

  • also how do you ...

also how do you load something like nicole into them, what are the requirements for the 3d animation to work and lyp sync and all that? it would be nice to have a program that just shows the avatar unless you want to bring something into view and have nicole control it by voice, but most programs have stupidly large interfaces that look "@#$@ing" aweful lol like ultra hal

  • Hey i have had a ...

Hey i have had a look around for some programs, what im trying to find is something like espeaking and ultra hal in one, something that can control my computer with voice and respond but also has the intl to learn like ultra hal, do you know how this could be done or are there programs that do it already. I want a system thats all in one or programs that can work off eachother. the x10 thing would be cool too of course. cheers, cool video anyway.

  • Depends on the ...

Depends on the country you live in. Of course if you import you must import the right voltage (120V 60Hz US, 240V 50Hz UK,Ozz and NZ). Do a Google for X10 and your country. Email me if you have trouble.

I use a custom Triac switch (for each device) which is opto-isolated from the PC. This can be driven from the parallel port or a USB connection.
Relays could be used but solid-state is best.
