Okok..i cant help but answer all the "chinese why" questions..
Firstly.disney screwed up wit the white face of mulan.thats jap tradition and none of the chinese women from which ever dynasty ever wore make up like that.
Secondly her real name is Hua Mu Lan. and this is a tradition chinese form of her name.Fa Mu lan is basically the same name in the pronunciation of a chinese DIALECT called cantonese.which is the same language the hongkongers speak and most chinese in the western countires...

When Mulan's checking on the other girls to see how to hold her umbrella reminds me of when I stayed with a VERY posh friend. At meals I always waited to see which knives etc to use before eating. Tres embarassing

the japanese stole a lot of traditions from ancient china (and korea). china probably changed their white face traditions (because change of era, dynasties etc), whereas japanese kept what they learnt from the chinese, and just made some of their own alterations from it.

ahh that i didn't know, but then i'm sure to say that the culture that is shown in the movie is a mixture of chinese and japanese.

Yeah but in the original fairytale, the little mermaid actually doesn't win the princes heart and instead of "belonging to the sea witch" as Disney said would happen, she dies.

But obviously, Disney couldn't have a dead princess, so they made the prince fall in love with her.

the changes to japanese might indicate why they changed it to Fa Mulan In japanese they have a fu sound instead of hu so it would be Fua instead of Hua

did mulans mom just say "want women with good breeding"!?

Does anyone know why they made it Fa Mulan, and didn't keep it Hua Mulan?

Mulan is Chinese. The movie is based on the epic poem "The Ballad of Mulan." In the poem, however, her name is Hua Mulan, not Fa Mulan, how it is in the movie.

reminds me of hwen i was 5 or 4 and this movie came out and i went over ot autns trailer and we watched it and i saw it second time. and i spent night watching it over and over again
