  • Why would you use ...

Why would you use your middle finger at 2:57, and then your thumb for the D/F#, which is essentially the same chord with an added D on the 2nd string? More confusing than needs to be.

  • There's a much ...

There's a much wider stretch when using the thumb. The first note requires the use of first finger on the 6th string (hammer-on) anyway. After that, having played the A chord, it's far easier to reach the first or second finger to the 6th string than it is to change your wrist position to bring your thumb over the neck to play it. Many of my students have hands too small for using the thumb. Keep your thumb in back of the neck and use fingers; it makes far more sense and is much easier.

  • I don't know. You ...

    I don't know.
You could play it wihtout the thumb, but it seems to be a lot easier to play with the thumb.
[but that's because i can't stretch my fingers very far on account of me being a beginner at guitar and playing string instruments without that much stretch.]
