  • They were trained ...

They were trained in judo by Mitsuyo Maeda who was skilled in ground techniques and modified the martial art.

  • i read the gracies ...

i read the gracies were trained in japanese jiu jitsu. so from what you've said brazilian jiu jitsu was created from the ground techniques of japanese jiu jitsu and techinques from judo?

  • yeah, I thought so ...

yeah, I thought so too, until I found out it was developped by a Judo master with the Gracie's, then the Gracie's went on to hone the new system (it was called Brazilian Jiu Jistu apparently because at the time there was little distinction between Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, therefore it became known as BJJ).

  • in jiu jitsu there ...

in jiu jitsu there are two combat systems (maybe more, I do not know them tho) - one where you actually fight against an oponent, and one where you show off your sweet moves etc..
In this vid, you can see both real fights (two people fighting AGAINST eachother), and staged fights, fights where people from the same team try to impress the jury with sweet moves. That's also why at some point you see 4 pairs standing on the medal stage (1 2 3 4th place thingy) instead of 4 singles

  • Actually, Brazilian ...

Actually, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu developed from Judo. JJJ and BJJ are vastly different martial arts. I respect Japanese Jiu Jitsu, but it produces a very different fighter than BJJ. Despite using many of the same techniques, the fact that BJJ practitioners train only to grapple and spar with resisting opponents on a daily basis makes for much better grapplers. And though I hate to generalize anything, I think grappling has proved to be probably the most dominating form of martial art out there.

  • Haha... typical ...

Haha... typical response of someone who has no real knowledge of martial arts. This is Jiu Jitsu, the same Jiu Jitsu that's been around for a hell of a lot longer than BJJ. This is where BJJ came from, developed for the weaker, smaller man. Of course, BJJ is now a dominant "sport", and has way more exposure, but you should really acknowledge your roots.

  • If you think this ...

If you think this is not jiu jitsu, then you are ignorant. BJJ is the latest variation of jiu jitsu designed for sport which is jiu jitsu with only ground work. This is traditional jiu jitsu from japanese decent which includes striking, take-downs, and submissions.

  • THIS is jiu jitsu ...

THIS is jiu jitsu according to the rules of the JJIF, and also known as Ju jitsu!
So it's different from Bjj and MMA, wich are also great!
You know it al started in Japan with samurai, but the western world changed it in to so many things...(judo, jiu jitsu and/or ju jitsu, Bjj, mma, etc)

  • See, you have 3 ...

See, you have 3 parts in ju-jitsu.
    1)Kicking and Punching (light-contact)
    2)Judo throws
    3)Submission
and you have two scores available
    -Ippon
    -Wazari
To win a fight by Ippon you need to have one ippon in each part!
To win by points you must have more points than the opponent after 3 minutes.
    A clear kick/punch scores 2 points
A clear throw scores 2 points
A grab handle (15 seconds) scores 2 points.
A choke, armbar/lock (opponent is tapping) scores 3 points...everything else is 1 point, thats all

I might be mistaken, but this looks alot like judo then jiu-jitsu, when in jiu-jitsu has there been Ippon on a take downm, or throw, thats judo, in jiu-jitsu you submit the person not throw him to end the fight, i could be wrong though so please respond and tell me if I am
