I don't know about that. Republicans don't seem to take umbrage when they hear Cole Porter's "You're the Top." ("I'm a nominee of the GOP, or gop! / But if, baby, I'm the bottom, you're the top.") Political humor was generally good-natured in that era, and much more even-handed -- not like today's SNL or THE DAILY SHOW, for instance.
