This Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington was used as the basis for the engraving of Washington on the one dollar bill. Stuart supposedly didn't finish the portrait on purpose, because he would have been required to give the portrait to Martha Washington if it was finished, and he liked it so much he didn't want to give it up. It is called the "Athenaeum portrait" because it was owned by the Boston Athenaeum for more than 150 years. Stuart said of the painting: "When I painted him, he had just had a set of false teeth inserted, which accounts for the constrained expression so noticeable about the lower part of the face."
