Trailer for Deepa Mehta's OSCAR-nominated Film WATER

thank you for saying that. this is a wonderful film, but i've found that american viewers often take the film out of context and think that this is a HUGE issue across India.

This was a great film but people need to understand something....There is a reason why Deepa Mehta (the director of this film) mentioned the fact that this took place during pre-independence of India...It is so people know that women WERE treated like this, but not TODAY(Maybe in some weird villages)...We have a female president today...Many Women are doing VERY well in India...This film depicts what it WAS like for Hindu Women....Yes, this was a good movie though.

Amazingly beautiful, and so heartrending at the same time...

i love this movie and yes i agree that this should have won an award and that pan's laby labyrinth isnt good and i wouldnt watch pan's labyrinth again. i wish that the guy would have came to take the girl right away after he spoke with his father so that she didnt die. i really wanted a happier ending. i'm glad this movie was made. i had no idea that women could be treated this way. i'm more thankful for my life.

Actually, the abuse of women doesn't only pertain to physical abuse, but also mental abuse, so yes, this does show as you say "women abuse". And it's DEGRADATION not degration. This treatment of widows isn't only because of religion, but culture. A lot of Asian countries had this treatment of their widows. And domestic violence is still a huge, major problem in India, so it's not as if people are doing anything about it (maybe NOW they are).

And initially, as for the comment "even Indians should see the darker side of women abuse" - who do you think this film was intended for? It was written in Hindi for a reason ...

Social degration of widows is a totally different ballpark from domestic violence. Social degration of widows is woven into the way of life/ religion that is Hinduism and is advocated by it, whereas very few societies support Domestic Violence.

Abuse to women can be acted out in many ways. This is one of them depicted in this movie

what do you mean by "women abuse". This film tackles the social degration of widows, not domestic violence. Please get your facts right.

Best Foreign Language Film. it lost to the Lives of Others. the other nominees were After the Wedding, Days of Glory and Pan's Labyrinth. I wanted Water to win and I HATE Pan's Labyrinth, but that's just my opinion.
