Tech With Dinjin201 - Tech Tips - Episode 1:

Here, i will show you how to use a USB Flash Drive as RAM...

A few Notes about this:
1. Flash memory can only be written to an x number of times (about 10 million rewrites). this means that after 1-2 years, your "flash-ram" will stop working, and you will have to buy another memory stick...

2. The second thing i wanted to mention is that you need to use ATLEAST a 512 MB Flash Drive for this. I know i used a 128 MB one in the video, but that's all i had empty for the moment... and as you saw, it didnt do much.

3. Good Luck, Please subscribe, and all comments are appreciated.

  • He has to be ...

He has to be running windows xp an he should be using atleast 512 mb flash drive. Since u said he hs an older computer he might be using usb1.0 instead of 2.0 so it really differs from machine to machine and sometimes even from port to port

  • Of course i know ...

Of course i know what you mean, but basically the paging file is pretty much a temp file on a device that is used as ram - random access memory. In technicality, you're correct but im just trying to keep it simple. The neat thing is that this speeds up older pcs because the read/write speeds of flash drives are higher than the ata hard drives in old computers.

ok cool, My friend tried it but he said it didnt work. I didnt get to ask him that many questions if he did it right. His desktop computer is very old. Are there any signs that you can tell it has improved?

  • Technically ...

Technically speaking this isnt going to give you any additional RAM. You are in fact moving the paging file to a separate physical disk which is Microsoft best practise where possible :) You might want to mention the general rule about pagefile size, it should be 1.5 times the amount of RAM ;-)

  • The ram will not ...

The ram will not show up on system properties but it does work - feel the flash drives they get warm and like i said windows xp doesnt officially support this so it wont show up - vista has something called readyboost that does this and IS supportes

  • Yes because if you ...

Yes because if you get 5x 1 gb drives then there are 5 separate ports to send and recieve data vs 1 port hooked to 5 gb -- so multiple sticks could be up to 5 x faster. =) i apologize for not mentioning this in the vid

Most likely not - vista has something called readyboost that lets you do this plus most (95%) of vista machines have ram thats already faster than a flash drive ... The only real way to be surd is to try it its very easy to undo...
