An unscientific test showing that the use of 3 ounces of acetone plus 3 ounces of xylene in 12.5 gallons of gasoline does nothing to improve fuel mileage.

  • I have an '86 ...

I have an '86 Prelude Si thats been used as my fuel-saver guinea pig. 2.0L engine, auto trans, 260k miles on the motor.

    before acetone: 27-28 mpg highway
    after 3oz acetone/10gal gas: 32-33 mpg

    with a good tail-wind i once got 36 mpg.

Acetone DOES work, but as many have said...there are several variables. It works by relieving the surface tension of gasoline, helping it to vaporize easier.

  • The amount of ...

The amount of acetone used = .1875% of 12.5 gallons, a very small amount. Xylene is already a component of gas and will do no harm. I change oil between 8k-12k miles and have it analyzed by an independent lab. I used acetone/xylene for 9 months or about 20k miles. Ive never had any problems with the oil breaking down or seals leaking with 222,000 miles on engine. In the 9 months that I used it though, I never saw an increase in mpg and agree that acetone does nothing of value.

  • It will degrade the ...

It will degrade the seals and break down your oil much sooner. Any savings in gas will be offset by mechanical maintenance.

KIPKAY tried to sell this snake oil. It does nothing of any value.

  • relocateing your ...

relocateing your intake air temp sensor to a constant source of cold air(wheel well, basically anywhere you can get a constant temperature LOWER than the intake charge) this will enrichen your afr to possibly 12:1 at most. its best to invest in an air fuel controller and you can even retard advance yoru ignition timings for certain rpm, load etc the possibilites are endless

  • When I used acetone ...

When I used acetone Xylene in my gas that didn't contain ethanol I saw a 2-3 MPG increase.
So far with ethanol no increase but any cars ECU is set for 14.7-1 AFR
When there is an increase in MPG more oxygen will flow by the O2 censor which will give a higher AFR. The ECU then will bring AFR back down to 14.7-1. Which will bring MPG back down.

  • I use 0.25 ounces ...

I use 0.25 ounces of Acetone per gallon of premium gasoline and get 25-30% increase in MPG with my 1993 Toyota Previa. I can't get my roommate to do the math, but he swears he is getting a huge increase in MPG. He can swear all he wants and it will mean nothing without the math. My neighbor did the math and always adds Acetone now. My motorcycle went from about 43 MPG to 70 MPG. It is hard to believe, but I checked it over and over. I haven't tried Xylene yet.

  • Yes I agree. But ...

Yes I agree. But never "give in." This has been the damise of every culture that has ever collapsed in history. Who knows. Maby the've been adding more to the fuel then being told. My mileage in my Merc used to be 23 in town. Now its only 20 - so something is going on.

  • Im very familiar ...

Im very familiar with Lou LaPointe and lubedev/brightgreen/smartgas. The car,a 2002 neon is in good shape. Timing is controlled by the ECM. Gas used did have just over 5% ethanol but has also been tested with straight gas. Can no longer find gas in this area w/o ethanol. I have tried this in my 2000 neon and 2006 kia with the same results using both the scangauge and miles driven/gallons used.
Oil companies are going to get your money one way or another whether it acetone for $16/gal or $4 gas

  • Well theres alot of ...

Well theres alot of variables there. Does the fuel contain ethenol? If so acetone will do nothing. Thats a biggie.
Also make sure that the timing is good. MAF?O2 cencors and all that.
The website that started all this was lubedev - and the guy that puts out all the research owns a 95 Neon in which all the testing is done on.
My Grand Marquis see's a 2 to 3mpg difference. And take note of what i said before. Do not use a scan gauge.

  • The acetone used ...

The acetone used was 100% pure from Sally Beauty Supply. We have tried from 1oz to 5oz and everywhere in between. Tried it alone and tried it with equal amounts of xylene and Torco GP7. The only way I can see that acetone would help improve mpg is if the injectors were dirty. Adding acetone would clean them up. If people really believe that acetone helps, (placebo effect?) by all means, use it. I really don't think adding that small amount to 10 gallons of gas is going to hurt anything.
