The snake was scared towards the monkey as well, and if you watch the end of the fight, it looks like it's tail is pinned down as it slithers away from the monkey. Animal cruelty wasn't really a concept then.

This is bullsh#t tying up a monkey in front of a snake like that. That is just plain cruel and cowardly

You're correct. That's probably why that scence was edited in the DVD versions.

The monkey had no choice but to fight the snake. Poor thing was tied up and couldn't get away. I didn't see a rope around the snake's neck. Very cruel. Picture yourself being tied to a stake and having to fight off a crocodile.

In the old VHS tapes this was the whole scene. In the new DVDs this fight was edited.
