  • An Etude is a ...

An Etude is a musical composition designed to challenge and increase the technical proficiency of the instrumentalist; whether or not they are intended for public performance is another subject. Technical proficiency should always be in the service of a higher musical aim, according to my piano teachers and all great pianists whose interviews I have heard: Horowitz, Rubinstein, Cliburn, etc.

  • An Etude is a piece ...

An Etude is a piece of music! You mean to tell me that Opus 10, No. 3 is NOT a piece of music? the melody is such that one could compose words to it. Most of the great pianists always played these pieces musically; just listen to Richter, the young Ashkenazy, and others. Why did Chopin bother to write 'crescendo,' 'dimenuendo,' dynamic markings, tempo indications, phrase markings, and other musical instructions if he thought that these pieces were not music?

Thank you for your response, but I believe all music needs to be performed musically! Your comment about Chopin's intentions is interesting.

Check out this pianist's stunning rebdition of the cadenza from Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto if it's still available on YouTube; it's some of the greatest playing I've heard, and he completely captures the essence of Prokofiev.

Stunning technician, but I think he completely misses the essence of Chopin. My opinion.

  • I like Berezovsky ...

I like Berezovsky but this seems to be wholly lacking in emotion. I suppose he is playing these quite exactly as they are written but it sounds like he's in quite a hurry as if he had to catch a train or something. I also found the third etude to be one of the blandest performances I've ever heard.

Again, it's not necessary to resort to attacks on others. If you wish to comment on the performance, you are free to do so. I completely respect that you find other musical performances superior. I could comment on your use of the English language if I wanted to as well, but it just isn't appropriate.

    That is all.

I hadn't heard "smart aleck" for quite a while. Isn't that how they spoke a century ago? How much "smart aleck" are you, Anca?

You can "just enjoy the performance". I enjoy many other performances of this music that I find superior. And, not taking things at face value like you, I like to comment. This guy Berez has good technique, but I don't know what else he has musically.

  • musicman, how about ...

musicman, how about YOUR intelligence judging that it is not intelligent to find something inferior in classical music? (nearly everything has inferiors and superiors...)

You say "This culture does not understand..." You must not include yourself, obviously. A mistake. Unless you are a strange creature from another planet, always a possibility.

  • first...classical ...

first...classical music is not "inferior" --- to use that word points out your lack of intelligence and listening capability. This culture does not understand may aspects of classical music...As far as dancing is concerned sure obviously youd play more "dance appropriated music" fr the situation...However that aspect has little to do with the cultural misunderstnading or lack of comprehension considering the music of Chopin

  • No offence, ...

No offence, numaiplange. I would be upset perhaps if he is the only pianist in the world. It turns out that there are many versions of this music that I like, and have.

This is a place to make comments. Rules don't dictate that they must be all favorable. You like fast playing and that's fine. I like to give my honest opinion, and this is a thumbs down for Boris. Too bad. Maybe next time we agree.

  • no offence budy, ...

no offence budy, but you are upset berezovsky doesn't do what you expect him to do. he is who is is because he kept his way in life, he is not about to stop now, what do you say? and some people really like fast playing; for example myself. He is famous for his technique, maybe as he ages he will loose some finger ability and become more melo, that usually happens/

he has a very strong fingers, because he almost doesn't move his hands and makes a very clear and brilliant sound...amazing technique...he's a great virtuosist...I play the Op 10 No 4 and know how difficult it is, and it's incredible to see this man playing this etude so....congratulations!

  • I agree with you, ...

I agree with you, HaeronTheGreat. I myself was at first turned off by how fast he plays, and only after I made an effort and listened I found some pleasing expression too.

I think that a good friend or fan of Boris should made him aware of this. If he is a true musician, nothing should be more important for him than people discovering his heart, and he should have no problems slowing down.

That's not what I'm saying - I think people listen amazed to how fast he can play, just marvelling at that, never bothering to actually LISTEN and discover Boris' heart in the music.

  • Yes, Jimmy, ...

Yes, Jimmy, classical music is inferior to popular in some aspects. Like socializing, dancing. You have to be SILENT in a concert hall. Not so with rap, country, pop, rock.
And imagine how much Berezovsky would have to SLOW DOWN so people could dance to his Etudes... More people want music as background and to dance, than as abstract enjoyment. So, classical is not always "the best". All this, of course, respectfully :)

  • well, according to ...

well, according to you logic, may I respectfully point out that classical music would be inferior than popular music. classical music is much less popular compare to many other music. in fact, if you do a survey, most people would not perfer classical. People like rap, country, pop, rock etc. most people would consider classical music loves weird and stupid. Ernest Hammingway and Leo Tolstoy are not the best seller nowadays, though they are amoung the best writer of all time.

I feel that he is very musical although his fingers are trying to catch up with the tempo of the first Etude. It sounds a bit off and uneven in some areas.
