    It IS very effective as a combat art. But unfortunately very few people actually practice/teach the applications (in the USA). And of that few, a fraction train in any realistic or practical way. which is too bad.

If you take the more mental aspects of it into consideration, the focus and calm would also help tremendously in psyching out your opponent and making better decisions in combat.
