Myanmar Lethwei.
Myanmar Traditional Boxing is a form of kickboxing which originated in Myanmar. Lethwei is in many ways similar to its siblings from neighboring South-East Asian countries such as Tomoi from Malaysia, Pradal Serey from Cambodia and Muay Thai from Thailand.

If Thai Boxing is the science of 8 limbs, then Lethwei can be called the science of 9 limbs, due to the allowance of head butts. In comparison, Lethwei can be interpreted as being bolder and more extreme. Myanmar boxers are said to be slightly bigger and taller than their Thai counterparts. The techniques are a bit slower and stronger than in the other Southeast Asian kickboxing forms. There are records recording Lethwei style matches dating back to the Pyu Empire in Myanmar. Ancient Myanmar armies successfully used Lethwei, Bando and its armed sibling Banshay in winning many wars against neighboring countries.

Participants fight without gloves or protection, wrapping only their hands in hemp or gauze cloth. Fights are traditionally held outdoors in sandpits instead of rings, but in modern times they are now held in rings. Popular techniques in Lethwei include leg kicks, knees, elbows, head butts, raking knuckle strikes, and take downs.

Matches traditionally and ultimately would go until a fighter could no longer continue. In earlier times, there no draws, only a win or loss by knockout. No point system existed. Extreme bloodshed was very common and death in the ring was no surprise. Nowadays in the match, if a knockout occurs, the boxer is revived and has the option of continuing; as a result, defense, conditioning, and learning to absorb punishment are very important. Myanmar boxers spend a great deal of time preparing the body to absorb impact and conditioning their weapons to dish it out. Matches today are carried out in both the traditional manner and a more modern offshoot started in 1996, the Myanma Traditional boxing. The modern style has changed to make the contests more of an organized sport under the government's organization. It should be noted that the modern style of Myanma Traditional Boxing greatly resembles Muay Thai in its sporting outlook, and not quite the rougher and tumble fighting of its rural roots.

  • Russians use the ...

Russians use the Myanmar system to a degree but not all. They also like the Hollanders and currently as far as I know Fedor has trained stand up with Hoost.

  • That is incorrect. ...

That is incorrect. Fedor has access to Myanmar trainers. Especially Crocop who used Nilar Win who is a medium ranked Myanmar fighter. I agree with you you should keep your hands up while punching. But if you are talking about the punch itself it does drop 2-5 inches from the target.

  • Guess what, any ...

Guess what, any good fighter keeps his guards up even if he's punching. So, your punching with the left hand, you keep your right hand up by your jaw. If they don't focus on keeping their guards up, of course they will get KOed. In fact, if the opponents had spent more time guarding, they might not have been KOed at all. FYI, Fedor is more of a grappler, so mentioning him is unrelated to this (his fighting style is totally different!)

  • Again, it depends ...

Again, it depends on which way your body is moving before you throw the punch. If your body is already moving upward, throwing your weight into an uppercut will be much more effective than stopping your momentum to throw a downward punch. Simple science.

  • It is 2x more ...

It is 2x more powerful. The reason is it allows you to put more weight into the strike and it maximizes the extension coming out of the shoulder. Secondly, It is taught in Mynamar that this also gives extra range in the punch. Again at Arts of Ancient wisdom online store there is a 2 volume book and acutal fight application using Wan Chine was at the time Champion of Myanmar explaining all the techniques. I changed my style and already my sparring parteners are talking about the power.

  • You dont like ...

You dont like blocking techniques? They dont like to block. Why? BLocking wastes time. You should be attacking constantly. You should be doing 3 things. 1. Attack and push at same time 2. counter 3. Block with the shoulder and forearm as last resort. Watch Fedor of MMA, he is always attacking. I've never seen him block one time and he is currently undefeated. Watch him, his punches drop as well and yet he either KO's everyone or submits everyone.

Also Sau Zwair Lay. You might want to buy his vidoes. His fights are amazing. He doesnt drop his punches as much but watch him since in one fight he throws 50 punches in about a 10 second span. His fists are a blur not too unlike the speed we saw in Bruce Lee.

  • Again this isnt ...

Again this isnt boxing. The Thai and Burmese would simply walk throw a weak straight out jab and counter with a big strike. And if you disagree. Watch the K1 fighters, US, and Australia vs Myanmar discs. Google Arts of ancient wisdom. You can buy the US VS Myanmar fights with 2 discs. ALL OF US gets KO'ed in under 15 seconds. You tell me who is better. In fact right now type in Doug Evans vs Wan Chine. Rich Shannon also got pasted in 15 seconds who came from PRIDE MMA.

  • its not really that ...

its not really that much harder if u punch downwards. cant say that it is harder at all but if the energy of the attack flows downwards into the body to the ground the body cant absorb the energy good as from a straight punch. the downward ankle isnt that big. just a little twist in at the end.
