Most jockeys need to weigh around 108 pounds that way when they way in with boots, tackle, helmet, and clothes they won't be too heavy. Usually that is somewhere between 113-118 pounds at the scale. So in general jockeys are pretty short. Usually somewhere between 4' 10"-5' 8". Of course the taller you are the skinnier one has to be...and most jockeys are pretty muscular; hence why they are usually around 5' 3" or so.

Great Video I just Have a few questions.
How tall is to tall to be a jockey?
and How light do they have to be?
Like I said great movie and thank you for it I have wanted to be a jockey since I was 8 and now I am 14. So thanks again! :)
Cool...sounds interesting. I want to incorporate some horse racing into a narrative feature some day. Sorry to hear about the leg.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1212188819 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt's just a fiction suspense/thriller with some Horse Racing in it. I broke my leg recently. I totally know how fast it can happen. Jockeys are really amazing people.
By doggiesarus [Affiliate User] 1212183137 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOhhh how cool. Are you writing a book about art? Yeah he was a tough guy. He never used to complain at all when he got injured.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1212170626 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo, I don't know him. I was doing research last year for a book I am(still) writing, and found his paintings-- His composition is amazing, and the colors are great. I have an art history major. From his story, he also seems like he was a really tough jockey.
By doggiesarus [Affiliate User] 1212136139 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHey thanks. Do you know my father? Yeah, we are a very artistic family. My dad is a oil painter, i'm a filmmaker, and my brother Luke is a stage actor.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1212111638 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOff topic but, Tom's a wonderful artist Matt, I love his work-- I was really thrilled to see that he was in your film. I said Wow! It's That Tom Chapman! I've drooled over his work for some years. And I think you did a wonderful job on the film. What a talented family.
By doggiesarus [Affiliate User] 1212100374 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWow...sorry for his loss. Jockey's are tough SOB's aren't they?
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1212049364 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveLast year a friend of mine was racing. He fell, got kicked in the head and died. He was 22. It doesn't stop his brother from racing. He decades every race to him instead.
By rayluvzdance [Affiliate User] 1212035590 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI was shocked when I read sir or Mame your comment.
That Jockey who could have died was my friend!
That is because my documentary was not about horses. That might be the next one. I'm sorry you don't give a damn about the fate of jockey's. I can tell you I'm glad my father escaped death when I was just a teenager.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1210959847 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt's all about the jockeys...not much said about the fate of the horses (although need we ask?). Personally I don't give a damn about the jockey's but I care very much about the horses!

By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1210933514 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI rated this a five thumbs up but it didn't register them as such so I wanted to let you know that I did give you a glowing report, even if it don't tell you I did!! lj
By jock4hire [Affiliate User] 1210916611 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveReally great documentary Matt! I'm still looking forward to a full length film and maybe you could include the women of horseracing also. Your film really shows a hard part of this industry and would like to see the next one include horse slaughter also and what the industry can do to stop this horrible practice. You did great with this one and I wish you the best in all your endeavors in the future. Take good care now. lj
By jock4hire [Affiliate User] 1210916101 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei love horse races. but it´s so sad to see this. but i don´t think horse races are bad or wrong or something. every sport is dangerous.
By Nordgirl [Affiliate User] 1210771790 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTell your brother that unlike hockey players, Jockeys don't wear pads. Just recently, they have an option of wearing a thin kevlar protector that is not even stardardized because it means they have to lose even more weight for weigh in. Also, jockeys don't have contracts like hockey. If they get hurt, they have no money coming in. In my opinion, nothing comes close in sports. These guys are the bomb.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1209945589 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei love this video, its really shows how tough these guys are. my brother was saying to me that NHL players are tougher and are more phisically fit, but i dont agree, i think jockeys are the thoughest guys in the world, i wanted to be a jock, but i am now 5 9'-way to tall.all my friends look at me weird when i say that.how do you think i could prove to my brother that jockies are tougher than NHL hockey players?
great video, thank you
p.s. what did you think about the Kentucky Derby this year?
Hola de verdad es admirable esto es una pasion un estilo de vida que solo se hace por amor
salu2 impresionante video desde México
My dad heard of both of them. He said that Alvaro died a year before he started riding in the 70's. He said that he didn't know Robert, but that they were both respected in the industry and a great loss to the industry.
By matttchapman [Affiliate User] 1206648193 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTwo of my uncles died in horse racing accidents. My uncle Alvaro Pineda died at santa anita race track and my uncle Robert Pineda died at Pimlico. I was wondering if you knew either of them Chapman?
By apmxican [Affiliate User] 1205781145 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveGreat! Yeah horse and jockey are a magnificent union of finesse and strength. Thanks for subscribing to my channel.
Matt Chapman
I have great respect for the jockeys all around the world, and also great respect for the thoroughbreds those magnificent animals.
