Unexpected effect when I turned the motor on to test for something entirely different.

Coil to Sparkplug Jump

  • Hi Ozicell...Haaaa! ...

    Hi Ozicell...Haaaa!!! I found it! :o)
Your spark plug wire is connected to the spark plug on the bench, the bench is isolated from the earth ground and the spark plug is not grounded, so the high voltage jump to the bench trough the spark plug. Then the metal casing of the coil touches the bench and conduct HV to the car ground.
It goes like this: HV wire to S P to the bench to the coil casing to the car ground.
Anything metalic instead of the coil would give the same result! Keep up. ;o)

  • Hey Gibs, Thanks ...

    Hey Gibs,

Thanks for the suggestion, do I do anything with the other terminals or just the secondary output?

  • Hi Ozicell, ...

    Hi Ozicell,
Grounding the center output, would be done ie:
by taking a big nail, hammer it down to about half, ground that nail by connecting a wire to it and turn the coil upside down and cover the nail with the center output of the coil. This way, the output of the coil goes directly to ground through the nail. The coil casing acting as an antenna kind of.
I know this might sound unusual but your experiment is as well. Please send a vid to see if it enhanced the effect. Take care.

  • G'day Gibs, ...

    G'day Gibs,

Please tell me more! Grounding the centre output?

I know exactly what you mean about the resonant frequency, I used to play with it when I played the piano. Same when I tuned my viola - which I never mastered! And the same effect as to two prop plane feathering it's motors to be in absolute harmony! And no! It's not the same coil! Just one I picked out of a wreck.

If you have any suggestions that will anhance this effect even more - do tell!
    Cheers
    Jeff

  • Wow!! Interesting ...

    Wow!! Interesting vid Ozicell.
Do you have the exact same coil on your car? Maybe you are experimenting what Nikola Tesla filled a patent for: Wireless energy transmission. Take two coils at the same resonant frequency and create an electromagnetic oscillation in one coil, the other one resonates. Just like two strings of the same tone on a guitar.
Have you tried to ground the coil center output to the car to see if it enhances the effect?
The coil casing might act as an antenna...

    Keep up

  • I think you are ...

I think you are right about the bench behaving as a large cap! I did insulate the coil from the bench and the spark did noticably reduce! Yes the bench does have rubber feet so it's probably not grounding!

I really need to get these ball plugs to the next level of testing but just don't have t he electronics background that a lot of you guys have. Even though they react well under pressure, it's just not enough to crack water and where I want o head!

    Cheers

  • there is alot of ...

there is alot of variables here.
it looks like there are rubber feet on the aliminium bench.
if thats the case and there is no earth to ground, then the bench would behave as a large capacitance.
even if not earthed, the gap the spark is jumping, and the surface area would have some capacity.
an ignition coil like that should be able to throw 1.5cm spark with the points wide open.
air is a dialectric and adds capacitance.
try insulating the coil from the table,&/or the table from ground.
