ok this is neat and everything but there are three men in the turret and none of them left not even the dude who took a look about. a M1A1 tank has a crew of four - commander, gunner, loader, pilot. even if it where a camouflaged guy there would be little to no room in the turret for four people and close enough quarters that an optical suit would be useless. if this is real footage we are seeing its our marines not the towel heads! death to all terrorist f**ks! semper fi all

This is nothing like that. These people don't serve God. They are killing in the name of a false god. And it is true their pals that have died are burning in hell and they will join them if they don't turn their life around. HE WHO LIVES BY THE SWORD SHALL DIE BY THE SWORD!

  • This was recorded ...

This was recorded in 1970, the BBC recorded him conducting all nine symphonies. Klemperer was a brilliant conductor who made some fine recordings. Sadly I think by 1970 he was well past his best and I find it rather sad to see and hear this performance.
But hey that's only my opinionif it presses your buttons go for it and enjoy

  • Seldom heard so ...

Seldom heard so well into the structure of that piece, due to K's handeling of the tempi and the graduel building up of tension.
    Or call me John Cage.

Then just let me ask, Sir, has HerrKlemperer (or whoever, plenty of names) shredded and burned the original score forever?

  • The only redeeming ...

The only redeeming value in this atrocity is a slow-motion graph of the inner workings of the fugue, aside from an injunction to the young on how not to conduct.

Let us not forget that Beethoven marked the movement Molto Allegro. If this is any faster than Andante, then my name is Karlheinz Stockhausen.

  • Secondly, ...

Secondly, Klemperer's conducting is woefully anemic...so much so that I would venture that an animatronic robot could cue the entrances and let the poor man go home to die. Those grand fermatas on the dominant chord...they're being held for not even two beats in this tempo. It's as though he is *purposely* S**king this music drier than English roast beef.

  • Ok, so the godawful ...

Ok, so the godawful slowness is indisputable, and the orchestra is not together at critical points, but there are far more serious objections to be had with this reading...and I mean 'reading,' because it's nowhere close to a performance. The primary job of the poor strings is to mete out a constant supply of 16th notes, and they are so focused on the tempo that it virtually never varies. There can be no ebb and flow because it's all ebb to start with.

Awright, but he was such a universal too, don't you think so, Sir?
But his Beethoven..., you comprehend my drift. K. had one leg in the 19th century, to mention but one thing.
    Grtz.

  • Excuse me lads of ...

Excuse me lads of being patronising. But there will come that grand day that most of you will see how utterly beautiful K.'s music was. And how raging interesting his interpretations were. 'The discovery of slowness'. I started out like you.
As for his illness, it's true. But K. said : "No matters, the work ALWAYS continued". There is just so much to say about this person, he had so much bad luck that you wouldn't believe it. Really ace of spades. I could go on for hours.

  • I've read (maybe in ...

I've read (maybe in the Solti's autobiography?--somewhere) that Klemperer suffered from mental illness, some kind of bipolarity or whatever.

That would explain a lot, because his Das Lied von der Erde is crisp and sparkling, as is just about everything else I've ever heard from him.

How very curious, but interesting to hear how different the same conductor can sound.
