Guitar Dude - I agree fully on your point that most people are only big on conservation for allegedly "cute" animals like pandas, whales & dolphins.

Unfortunately, poaching is primarily linked to poverty in third world countries and similar to the drug business, the profits are high and when you eliminate one set of poachers, another crew soon takes over that lucrative opportunity for easy cash....

I was talking in general about animals kept in conseration projects. They breed them and care for them but is that really the way it should be? I think we should try more to do with stopping poaching rather than grooming them. If some random ugly bird is dying out a lot of people wouldn't give it attention, but oh, when it's a big fluffy cutie-pie we all care.

Furthermore, I suggest you check your facts cos if it wasn't for tourist dollars then conservation facilities in so many third world countries would simply fall over and poachers would just hunt the animals to extinction - do you think poachers give a rats about a species being wiped out ???

No mate, animals like these should be out in the real world. It's their instinct to survive, to be as a pack, to hunt, not to be nurtured like human babies and repeatedly called 'cute' off mindless idiots.

As ideal as it would be to let them free, it is much more likely that they would live a more happy and fulfilling life in captivity. They're kept fed, and with other pandas to play with. In an ideal world they could be free in the wild? But then they'd just be subject to being poached. It is a very serious problem, as troyonplanet has pointed out.

I am being reasonable, but I don't think you thought before you posted your original comment. Poaching is so rife in third world countries that zoos, sanctuarys and controlled parks are often the only safe place for endangered species. If you check out WOLONG RESERVE on the web, you will see it is a very large & spacious facility and the world's number one panda breeding facility.

Without the centre the panda in china would be in big trouble.....
