Well, I'm not a english major but like many intelligent ppl I do know when you use these, " ", you quoting someone, if not then you're paraphrasing; which is permissible. and the way you wrote seemed as though you were writing in sequential order. To me, Diane's "look" wasn't necessarily judging her, more like she was doubting Whitney's answer. Not judging Whitney as a person.
