Same thing, same characters, but cantonese is easier to say for those who don't know english but mando's easier for ppl who know english like u and me.

i used to have this movie..until i lent it to my uncle and it disappeared lol.

knowing the basics is good and then just living in the environment will get you into it. but in chinese there are many idioms and such imputed into daily language so it's much harder than just learning how to speak the words.

I believe that the best way to learn a language is to incorporate it in your daily life. I can speak cantonese, but I'm still in the process of learning mandarin. :) I'm asking my friends to speak to me in Mandarin, and it does help me to improve.

Yeah, in any society usage is different in different areas. (British English, U.S. English, Australian English, heck, NW, NE, SW, and SE U.S. English is different as well.)

I agree that they are the same to some degrees cause I know both too. But I know a friend from Hong Kong who took a mandarin course and was talking to me about it and that was the first time I noticed that mandarin ppl express certain things differently than cantonese ppl. I am sure you noticed too. When translating some canto into mandarin or some mandarin into canto word for word, some senteces just sound awkward.

They are the same, only different pronunciation.
I know both, and trust me, if you study Chinese, prepare to go through Hell.
Memorizing thousands of characters and word phrases, as well as proverbs and words, and the story behind them.

its very hard to say whether its hard or not. i know some ppl just don't get the language but some can master it in a very short amount of time. i think learning mandarin would be easier because u can learn from books, whereas cantonese you'll need to live in the environment. if you are serious about learning, i suggest have someone teach you the basics first cause they are very important. good luck!
