    yes, exercise. there is no sport that really works the abdominal muscles the way they need to be in order to get them back into the shape they were before pregnancy. belly dance does this. this is its original purpose. it is meant to be done at home or with friends of the same gender. it is definitely something good for the body, it helps to keep you very fit and in shape. almost any kind of dance will, though most will only work for strengthening your arms and legs, not your abs.

    i never said in front of guys. that has nothing to do with it. traditionally it was meant to be done only in the company of family or of friends of the same gender. the costumes that leave so much skin exposed are a product of the west, originating in hollywood between the 1880s and 1930s. traditionally both men and women danced, just not men and women together. the costume was simple, conservative dress with a scarf or sash tied around the waist.

    the west did not have of understand this dance. this is why more girls died in childbirth in western culture than in that of the middle east. they didn't know what do expect, and their bodies were not fit and prepared to go through something so strenuous and traumatic.

    a girl who was well trained in the dance was more likely to be able to remain calm through childbirth and recover more quickly in a time without hospitals and medications. i've been through childbirth and only recently started trying to learn to dance and many parts of it feel the same, the difference is that you're in control. the move she's teaching in this video is exactly like a contraction and a push. i wish i'd learned this before i had my baby, perhaps it would've been easier.

    these dances did not originate to show off in front of guys. that's something invented by westerners who saw something they didn't understand and decided it was indecent. the ancient origins of this dance were as a celebration of the creature God made and of fertility, and they were used to train and condition the body in preparation for childbirth.
