World War II Second World War Videos

This episode tells the tragic story of the "bridge too far" and the ill-fated Operation Market Garden--the Allied operation that was supposed to end World War II in 1944. Montgomery's rather fanciful conclusion that Market Garden was "90% successful" was hardly supported by the facts. The operation was an unmitigated failure. This episode, from the landmark television series Battlefield, features fascinating archive footage from all over the world. The program includes a review of the political and military situation before the battle, portraits of leaders and commanders, an explanation of weapons and tactics, and the story of the battle itself. Vivid graphics place the battle into the context of the war as a whole. CHAPTERS Introduction * Montgomery's Bold Idea * The Allied Forces * Allied Commanders * Allied Weapons * An Armada of the Air * The German Response * Destination Arnhem Bridge * Approx run time: 1 hr, 45 min. NTSC

  • Don't get me wrong. ...

Don't get me wrong. I said the 82nd was a great unit. It provided the operational experience incorporated in Sicily and Salerno towards the other airborne divisions in the war. Indeed, many of the 101st field officers were transferred from the 82nd.

Believe it or not, I actually watched Band of Brothers in its entirety last year. I watched this documentary on the military channel about 3-4 years ago.

  • I consider both ...

I consider both close to equal fighting ability. The first 2 jumps the 82nd attempted were pretty much disasters. Both accomplished much during D-Day considering the drop mess. I blame the 82nd for not taking Nijmagen until British armor arrived. The 82nd performed well in "the Battle of the Bulge" holding the northern shoulder. But of course "Band of Brothers" for all its greatest turns everyone into an expert

  • Experience does not ...

Experience does not equal skill. The 82nd had two additional combat jumps under its wings than the 101st but they were both unorganized and ineffective.

It was the 101st that secured the main causeway between Omaha and Utah on Normandy. It was the 101st that held Bastogne under grueling conditions.

The 82nd of WW2 is great, the 101st is elite.

  • Superb. Very high ...

Superb. Very high quality, and the subject matter is IMO one of the most fascinating and well, "glorious" episodes of that period of WWII.

The "defeat" at Arnhem and elsewhere rightfully added to the prestige of the British fighting man.
