I realize "Tom" is a derogatory term for a black man with whitebread personality attributes.

But I don't see WHY both of them would be named TOM. How would either of them know who's being addressed when someone says TOM to them. Wouldnt that create confusion? It denies a sense of individuality to either character.

That just doesn't seem very logical or realistic.
