Because there's a competitive community for it. Most of our sports are pretty darned old, and there are probably some better newer ones, but thats not the point. People are familiar with American Football, so they like it, regardless of it being a pretty silly sport.

And if you were about to say "Durp, Halo 3!" then I hope you learn what a good shooter is. If not, I apologize.
