Elizabeth Shuster, M.D., a neurologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida, describes multiple sclerosis. MS is a disease of the central nervous system that includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves. MS and related diseases are called demyelinating diseases because they result from damage to myelin (the insulating covering of nerves). There are several types of multiple sclerosis.
