i can do this haristyle and my hair is very layered so I'm sure it is possible with all sorts of hair. One of the pursebuzz videos shows how to insert the pins in correctly, I couldn't do it before I watched that video so I suppose it's all about how the pins go in.

I think Pursebuzz's instructions are more easier.

practice practice practice makes perfect. I do this with my hair and it only takes a couple of minutes now. Everyone thinks I spend hours! If you do it with your hair wet, it will come down curled at the end of the day.
