For those that are curious, To those that are curious about what went through my head as I made this video I write to you here so you may hear the thoughts of an artist. As I was making this video I devoted my knowledge of the Soo Bahk Do/Moo Duk Kwan art into the making. With the mixture of video and still pictures I hoped to convey a balance of movement and stillness much like many of our martial techniques . While I was making this video I started translating and subtitling the lyrics to the first song "Swallowtail Butterfly" but when I got halfway through the video I went back to watch it and realized that it took your attention away from the martial artists in the film, and because they are our stars and this is their special moment and time to shine I removed the lyrics. Now there is several reasons for why I chose "Swallowtail Butterfly" as our leading song. One was that it is a Korean song, and since Soo Bahk Do was an art that was developed in Korea, what could be more fitting then going back to it's roots with a song from it's native language. Two, after translating and reading the lyrics I found them very inspiring and symbolic. To me describing the journey and struggle to always improve one's self. The second song "The Voice" was inspired by the sense of community shown by our Dojang. So many of our members showed up to participate, and while I was unable to participate due to illness I was there to support and video record them. While it didn't all make it into the video for time reasons I did record and note that without reminders or being asked that our junior members always acknowledged and bowed to their senior before coming up to perform. So with some more symbolism from the song I wished to show that these are our voices; the future of our art. I also hope that I subtly conveyed my respect and pride in them with this video. Disclaimer- the Songs are not owned by me.
