It is proportionally larger than a regular minibike. It's powered by a 4.5 hp Chinese clone of a Yanmar diesel engine.

  • no glowplugs.... ...

no glowplugs.... Not every diesel needs them, it depends on the type of combustion chamber they use. Cars usually have them, but smaller diesels do not usually have glow plugs.

  • Very good design by ...

Very good design by the looks of it, I love the lovely low-down torque of a diesel - great idea to stick one in a minibike frame, only issue seems to be to top end RPM at around 3600 - usually recommended at around 3000RPM aren't they. What have you done in the way of gearing/transmission, is it multi-ratio or single? I suppose multiple ratios would keep you within the peak torque band of this engine, and you'd probably get around 45mph out of it with all that torque on tap. Very interesting!

You, my friend, are a star. I never would have spotted that secondary lever, I prodded it with a screwdriver and the engine died. There's a bracket there too so I'm thinking maybe a solenoid could go in there IF I could get to it. Still, for now my problems are lessened, thank you.

  • I just drilled and ...

I just drilled and tapped a little hole to mount a small cable with a lever at the other end to pull on the little tab at the very bottom of the throttle assembly, which shuts it down, it wasnt there on the video yet, you can see where I had to reach down to shut it off.

Thanks, figured it would be something like that. I need to find another way to stop the engine on my diesel Royal Enfield then. Dual cable with an indent maybe?

  • Because the ...

Because the decompression lever opens the exhaust valve just a tad. When the engine is running the piston will mash the exhaust valve when it is opened by the decomp lever.

Nice job. Sounds like a cutting edge, state of the art Harley engine. The Yanmar clone manual says don't use the decomp to stop the engine, any ideas why?
