With hydro cranes you can only set a load down as fast as you can hyrdraulicly spool out cable. Plenty of time to react when the load is close the ground, but when your load is elevated, you'll almost never have enough time to safely lower a load. With mechanical friction type cranes, you can just cut the load loose and let it crash to the ground in the ultimate worse case scenario. An operator with a brain avoids those situations!

It never fails the amaze me how many accidents happen almost on a daily bases. There's a jackass who runs a crane in my town who say "your not a crane operator until you've flipped one over" By that logic I hope I'm never a crane operator!
