proxies are rather easy to find but unfortunately offer little if any protection anymore. Find "alternate" ways :)

I was using a "real FTP server".

Barely any computer knowledge is needed to find the IP of a server. As for it shutting down after a few attempts, I've NEVER had a server shut down from attempting username/passwords. At most, you will be temporarily IP banned. Most servers, however, do include a feature that cuts down bandwidth to any IP attempting multiple user/pass combo's (by the server or an IDS) to the point that your connection to it is too slow to even work.

for real it would be much harder, you would need a bigger password dictionary, a username dictionary and you will also have to find out the ip address of the ftp server. Also, real ftp servers shut down after a few invalid attempts at guessing password. Oh yeah and you would also need a proxy to cover your IP address so the owners of the ftp server cant trace your comp, and safe proxy servers are hard to find.

remember that you can usually try obvious usernames first which could save a lot of time. (Ex. user, admin, default, etc)

replace "-l user" with "-L pathtofile.txt", where pathtofile is the path to your dictionary file. This will take the first username out of that file and try it with every password in the other file you specified. If no matches, it uses the next username then every password and so on.
