#83 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Science & Technology - Canada. The World's Simplest Motor mated to the World's Simplest 5-Speed Shifter. Watch me assemble a 5-speed manual shift homopolar motor...and go through the gears! This homopolar motor uses a neodymium magnet, a battery and a conductor. It works similar to the 150-year old electric homopolar motor invented by Michael Faraday, and works by the principle of the Lorentz force, discovered after Faraday died. The Lorenz force law states ...

• Hey thanks, ...

Hey thanks, appreciate the star, too!

I lucked out that it held together for this whole one-shot movie. It was time-consuming to set it up just right, what with crashing coins and wire tweaking, but well worth it for the effect!

It will run about 5-10 minutes on a battery. It's hard on batteries because it's almost like a short circuit.

• The copper wire can ...

The copper wire can be found in common household wiring. 14 or 16 gage solid core wire will work fine.

The coat-hanger is steel which enables the battery with magnet to stick to it. And it conducts electricity ok.
A steel welding rod will work instead of a coat-hanger, too.

A small ball magnet at the hanger to battery connection may be necessary to get it to stick.

• When I made this, ...

When I made this, it took a long time to set up and tweak.
It may not work well with modifications, but I simply suggested a washer that could hold up the non-magnetic US coins, as a possible solution.
It may work with the US coins between magnet and battery...or not. The battery may not hang right.

I would suggest to try it for youself...magnets are available at K&J Magnetics at the link in the more info, to the right.>>>

I'm not sure why you wish to turn poles around?
