http://jasonlpsmith.googlepages.com/ I built this aquarium in June 2007. The tank is unusual since the fish are able to swim above the apparent water level.

The tank was constructed with 4.5mm acrylic, the pump is a flopump FL-2202 diaphragm pump.

There is some more information on my website including a technical drawing which I created to laser cut the acrylic.

Music: Saint-Saƫns, "The Carnival of the Animals", movement 7 "Aquarium".

  • I designed the tank ...

I designed the tank with AutoCAD (it is very expensive, but I have access to it at work). A copy of the technical drawings can be found on my website (see link in video description). The animation was done with an excellent free program called "Art of Illusion".

  • So filling the top ...

So filling the top section would take about (0.3m^3) / (0.004m^3 per minute) = 75 minutes with the pump I used.

You could get a bigger pump, when you buy it, just make sure that it is a selp priming water pump (it can S**k air and water) and check that the self priming depth is greater than the height between the top and bottom water level.

    (p.s. m^3 = cubic meters)

  • If your whole tank ...

If your whole tank is 1.5m tall then the height between the top and bottom sections will be less than 1.5m, so the pump I used would be able to work.

The pump I used can pump about 4L/min or 0.004 cubic metres per minute. I will estimate that your top water level might be 0.8m above the bottom water level (this depends on how you design it). I will also assume that the top section is 0.75m wide. Therefore the top section is 0.8m x 0.75m x 0.5m = 0.3 cubic meters. (continued...)

  • The pump discharge ...

The pump discharge goes to the bottom section, yes it does matter where the pump discharge goes. I keep the pump outlet hose in the water far away from the top section.

The pump type must be a self priming pump (that means it is able to S**k air), I would say that a diaphragm pump is best. The flopump FL2202 that I used has a self priming height of 1.5m, so my pump would not work if there was more than 1.5m between the top water level and the bottom water level. (continued...)

  • Nothing happens ...

Nothing happens when the power goes off. I have used a diaphragm pump (the pump has two built in one-way valves). I keep the pump off most of the time because it is noisy. The water stays in the top section when the pump is off.

  • The air pressure ...

The air pressure also alows fish tanks to be linked up by pipes full of water for the fish to swim in from tank to tank. I was thinking about taking two 300 gallon tanks and linking them by a six inch plastic pipe
