I'm hearin ya..! My point really was that all this drug pushing (whoops, I meant advertising) obviously results in greater sales volumes which SHOULD result in lower costs thus off-setting the advertising costs. That Americans pay more than anyone else regardless does not surprise me because as you point out, in this business it seems the cost of manufacture often has little to do with the final retail price. Basically they charge what they can. What a dirty business!

The pharmaceutical industry charges Americans a higher prices for drugs than any other country in the world. In fact drugs prices are only about half as much in Canada. This leads some Americans to buy their medication in Canada to save money.

Pharma industry is the most profitable industry in the world in terms of investment returns. A pill that could cost 5 cents to be manufactured can be sold for several dollars.

One thing though...I don't entirely buy into the argument that all this advertising results in costs which are ultimately passed onto the consumer. Given that, as a result of this advertising, 80% of the world's drugs are consumed by Americans (F**k is that true?!) there is economy of scale which would have a downward effect on prices. Anyway, who knows how they set their prices - one thing's for sure - they're making shitloads of money!

The obviously horrendous implications and plain immorality of the idea just make me shudder. There are benifits to having a capitalist society but this is taking it too far! Interesting to hear our neighbor New Zealand also allows it - I didn't know. It must NEVER be allowed to happen in Australia!

The dollars are clearly not being spent on new drugs. They are being spent on monopolizeing the marketplace, scuttleing more effective and less expensive efforts that threaten their profits, and creating self sustaning profit venues for those in control which is driving healthcare through the roof. The costs to do that are also being passed on to consumers, THAT is why they are expensive. I can't afford health insurance. Do I even need to explain why?

1) Get insurance.
2) If the drug is NECESSARY for you than the dollars spent on research to bring a new drug to market like prilosec is equally necessary. These costs are substantial and must be recouped. This means drugs are not cheap. I agree they should not advertise to the public, a cost passed on to consumers.

I take prilosec. IT NECESSARY FOR ME! But I don't have insurance. Can you imagine how I felt when it went generic and went from $130 prescrition to $30 OTC for a months supply? Now why do you think there is a drug store being built on every corner nowdays? You got it, price protection lobbies in DC make it profitable. It's happenening with all drugs. But phycological issues is where they really get busy.
