I'm on your side. LOL "A pimp named slick back"
By Supaboy000 [Affiliate User] 1214483177 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOMG terrible tone throughout. who uses dead as strings to slap with? Teaching slap on a 6 string, poor choice. All the percussive effect comes from the string hitting the top fret or fingerboard. Hitting just on the 24 fret will like in the video create harmonics. This sounds cool practicing home alone but it kills your fundamental so live one hears piddly squat.Does anyone else think this guy sounds like Katt Williams/ "A pimp named slick back"
By testosteronious [Affiliate User] 1213704052 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI am only saying, don't make a mistake, just because this sounds different than younger players.
I personally love late 60's/early 70's funk and R'n'B, the echos of which I hear here.
I think we should appreciate the diversity of American Black music - you always had that rejection of styles that had a rougher esthetics with the argument that the musicians allegedly could not play - see the jazz history book.
This might not be how you wnat to sound like, and that's OK, just keep an open ear.
To me it's clear from these clips that Tony's background is blues and early R'n'B. He was shaped by his work for motown since the 60s and became a big name with Tony Williams lifetime in the 70s. I take your point that he seems to be missing at times, probably he has stopped practising, something you may find excusable or not for somebody his age and his recording list.
By midzulo [Affiliate User] 1212660917 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHe also doesn't explain simple and fundamental things like whether you're allowed to move your wrist, if you arm should be loose or not, where the rotation comes in.
Sure you can watch him, but he sounds bad and it's not that obvious for a beginner.
I don't think the problem is the style he's playing, it's that he's playing really badly. And that isn't all the production's fault, seriously.
I'm not saying he isn't a great bassist, I've never seen him before, but in this video he is pretty atrocious.
Dude it looks like he's trippin balls on some sort of substance XD
By seventhCrucifix [Affiliate User] 1212262861 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIMHO the people posting these negative views are wrong. The video is badly produced, but the guy is fantastic. You can hear the early R'n'B and motown stuff in it. And that's where slap bass came from. Like jazz this is very casual and spontaneous. He is encouraging us to explore the instrument, focusing on SOUND production, a great approach to teaching! This is NOT about riffs and clichees. I think one should respect every musician, and I wished I have had teachers as musical as Tony Newton.
