Lee Marvin
Wand'rin' Star
from the Motion Picture
"Paint your Wagon"
........is a musical film released in 1969, adapted by Paddy Chayefsky from the 1951 stage musical by Lerner and Lowe, set in a mining camp in Gold Rush-era California. Chayefsky provided a significantly changed storyline from the stage musical version. In the film "Rumson" is simply called "No Name City", and Ben Rumson has no daughter. The former "Julio" is now an American (Clint Eastwood) and Ben's (Lee Marvin) partner (he is called "Pardner") in the gold claim.

LEE MARVIN (February 19, 1924 August 29, 1987)
was an American film actor. Known for his gravelly voice, white hair and 6' 2" stature, Marvin at first did supporting roles, mostly villains, soldiers, and other hard-boiled characters, but after winning a Best Actor Oscar for his dual roles in Cat Ballou, he landed more heroic and sympathetic leading roles.

Wand'rin' Star Lyrics:
I was born under a wandrin' star
I was born under a wandrin' star
Wheels are made for rolling, mules are made to pack
I've never seen a sight that didn't look better looking back
I was born under a wandrin' star

Life can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry
Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry
Home is made for coming from, for dreams of going to
Which with any luck will never come true
I was born under a wandrin' star
I was born under a wandrin' star

Do I know where hell is, hell is in hello
Heaven is goodbye forever, its time for me to go
I was born under a wandrin' star
A wandrin' wandrin' star

(Life can make you prisoner and the plains can bake you dry)
(Snow can burn your eyes, but only people make you cry)
(Home is made for coming from, for dreams of going to)
(Which with any luck will never come true)
(I was born under a wandrin' star)
(I was born under a wandrin' star)

When I get to heaven, tie me to a tree
For I'll begin to roam and soon you'll know where I will be
I was born under a wandrin' star
A wandrin' wandrin' star

  • Five of the songs ...

Five of the songs in the film ("The First Thing You Know", "A Million Miles Away From The Door", and "The Gospel Of No Name City", "Best Things", and "Gold Fever") were composed especially for the film by Alan Jay Lerner and Sir Andre Previn, because Frederick Loewe declined to work on the film.

  • "Wand'rin Star" by ...

"Wand'rin Star" by the way, made it to #1 on the U.K. charts, and Lee Marvin even sang it on "The Ed Sullivan Show". I always felt, however, that this film got a bad rap, because I love it!

  • I saw this movie in ...

I saw this movie in England when it was released. It has remained one of my favourites. I bought the the LP soundtrack and the single (45) of Wandrin' Star which was a hit record in the U.K. It was also the first time I had heard Harve Presnell sing..amazing! I loved Clint Eastwood too, he sounded like he was a regular person singing to himself, only with a better than average voice. Great scenery, great cast, great music, great songs, great story...what more can anyone want!
