The gun debate continues to brew in Virginia, where memories of the Virginia Tech shootings are still raw. One group is at work defending its "right to keep and bear arms." The Virginia Citizen's Defense League (VCDL) is in full-force behind "open carry" laws. ABC's John Donvan reports.

  • I am old enough to ...

I am old enough to be a cop. I can pass the same background check a cop passes. I have more hours of gun training than a cop. If someone thinks I shouldnt have a carry permit, there are 2 possible reasons.

    1. They think a badge is a magical charm that makes a person less dangerous.
    2. They think disarming cops would make us safer.

I am safer and more effective than a cop. I am at the scene at the time of the crime to stop it, and unlike cops, I will get in trouble if I carry while drunk.

  • I'm not scared of ...

I'm not scared of it, I would just think it weird. I fully understand your reasons for doing it now: political activism, a lack of legal concealed carry, etc.

With the 2nd Ammend in full effect, I would just think it weird. I'd have the same reaction if I saw someone walking around in a mall with a football helmet on because of the slight chance that a brick is going to fall from the ceiling.

Once we have our rights secured, there's no reason to flaunt them.

  • I agree with all of ...

I agree with all of that, but that's not what my comment was about. I think that if the 2nd Ammendment were fully resurrected, the majority of people you'd see openly carrying would be those who have a slightly unhealthy attitude towards guns. It's a bit ostentatious.

Not that I'd want to prohibit someone from doing it, but considering modern life, I just can't think of too many situations in which open carry would be necessary - outside of a political statement; which wouldnt be necessary.

Right on! There is a opencarry movement starting in Kalifornia as well (though small thanks to the liberals who would not rather bear the responsibility of protecting themselves and their family).

I commend these men for fighting for our constitutional right. Carry on!

  • The real advantage ...

The real advantage to open carry is the education of non-gun owners. Currently, our culture 'knows' that only cops and criminals carry guns. Those who legally open carry, and explain this to those around them, will eventually change that perception.

It's a matter of acclimitization; when people are used to other normal, regular people carrying; they will lose the fear of guns that they've been taught to have.

  • Orygunner makes a ...

Orygunner makes a good point BTW. In fact, registered full automatic firearms have only been used in a crime ONCE! By an ex-police officer. I'm sure some of you saw the Virginia Tech hat on one of those guys. Had one person in that school had a pistol he could have stopped the killing. The cops who interviewed the survivors said he often had his back turned to some of them as he was searching for the ones he wanted to kill.

  • I'm still amazed at ...

I'm still amazed at the people I see who are scared or worry about those who carry open. Those are the law abiding citizens. I remember once being poked in the back in the bank and being told that I couldn't carry a gun into the bank. I told the guy I was reaching for my wallet and I gave him my CCW Instructor business card. I told him that he couldn't be more wrong. A woman on line asked for a card and eventually took a class from me. There's nothing to be scared of Grantsinmypants.

  • Here in ...

Here in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, I Open Carry on a daily basis.
Most cops know its legal in these states, but some cops get all nutso and try to make a scene. But when I show them the law photocopied, they get frustrated and tell me that "they dont like it".
Oh well , too bad. Im a law abiding citizen just like a Police Officer. If he can open carry, so can I.
Who knows, one late night it might be his wife or child that I may have to protect from some crackhead scumbag.

I have been open carrying for several years now, and have never had my gun come out of it's holster while in public. I hope it never will.

  • I understand that ...

I understand that people are open carrying because there's fewer and fewer options with all of the laws today, but open carry, by itself, as a tactic, is overkill

Carrying a gun in the vast majority of situations, or for most people, is unnecessary

Those who think they need a gun everywhere they go are just as paranoid as those who think that guns in private hands will lead to anarchy

I only carry at night, alone, or in similar high-risk situations. And, to not scare, I do it concealed

The other 75, non-nut job, people around him all with their guns.

Awesome segment. It's about time. As for open vs. concealed, I do both. There are places for both and some places I couldn't go unless it was concealed.
